Palisades School Board 1995 - 1999
When our two children started school in Palisades, I began to attend
School Board meetings. In 1995 I was elected to the Board. During my
four year term I was fortunate enough to be elected Board President
by my colleagues. . Long before most school districts, I proposed a
smoking ban on all school grounds, which passed. The Board worked hard
to give good value to the taxpayer, and I learned to make the tough
financial decisions required of an elected official. When faced with
very necessary renovations to several of our buildings, we designated
a portion of our millage to capital reserve to save on future debt service.
We also negotiated a contract with the faculty that instituted performance
standards and increased accountability for teachers. During my time
on the board, I made myself available to my constituents who were free
to call me at home at anytime to voice their concerns or discuss issues.
Serving on the board gave me experience in direct contact with the public
as well as experience in making difficult decisions.
